About My Inner Life

The whole earth is full of His glory.

– Isaiah 6:3

My Inner Life is built on the foundational belief that God is at work in all things. He is there in the most mundane events of our lives and the most momentous. He speaks through the people we encounter, our changing circumstances, our emotional ups and downs, the beauties of creation, and so many other ways!

Yet it’s easy for us to be only vaguely aware of Him or to miss Him entirely! We need to slow down and to listen if we really want to hear Him. A spiritual director is someone who can help us with that.

The director’s job is to listen to the directee and to help the directee listen for the leading of the Holy Spirit. A typical session involves extended times of prayer and quiet listening to the Lord. There are also times when the directee and director talk and reflect with one other. Working together they are able to discern more clearly what the Lord may be saying and doing in the directee’s life.

Spiritual direction provides a valuable opportunity for us to come to know the Lord more intimately. In addition, sessions provide a safe place for us to come to know ourselves better and to be known by another person. Both are essential for our growth and healing.

My Inner Life is a Christian ministry but is open to spiritual seekers who long to discover more of God’s reality for themselves.

David Brannen is an ordained Anglican minister who served 31 years in local church ministry before retiring in 2021. He continues to minister as a spiritual director to individuals and small groups.

He grew up in the Atlanta area and worked for years in business and public relations before being called to ordained ministry. He earned a master of divinity degree (M.Div.) from Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge Pennsylvania, and served for 14 years on the staff of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, He is the founding pastor of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Versailles, Kentucky, where he served for 17 years before retiring.

David also holds a certificate in spiritual direction from the Christos Center for Spiritual Formation and is a member of the Evangelical Spiritual Director’s Association.

His interest in becoming a spiritual director grew out of his own experience working with a director after serving for years in ministry without one. The deepening of David’s own experience of the Lord—and the impact on his ministry—was so profound that he felt called to become trained in spiritual direction so he could offer that same gift to others.

David and his wife, Claire, have been married more than 40 years. They have three grown children, two sons-in-law, and a grandson. The Brannens live in New Albany, Indiana, a community in the Louisville metro area. David’s hobbies include following college football, running, and golf.
